MOJO MARK WILMOT'S BIRTHDAY WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

Sunday Songwriters' Revival
Every Third Sunday of the month, "Mojo" Mark Wilmot hosts local and regional songwriters who showcase original songs and tell us the stories that inspired them. Mark is an Athens native who grew up singing the songs his Granny taught him on their rides through the hills of Northeast Georgia. He sings his own songs in the Athens area with the Redstone Ramblers, including many times at No. 3 Railroad Street. Please see the Events Page for details and the Photo Pages for images of their events. Mark is eager to help promote local songwriters through this monthly event.

This month, Daniel Hutchins and Eric Carter, both of Bloodkin, are featured.

Daniel Hutchins
Daniel has been writing, recording, and performing his songs professionally since 1994. He has recorded and toured solo, as well as with his rock n roll band Bloodkin. He has also toured and recorded with Moe Tucker and Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground, appeared onstage with Lou Reed, Mike Mills, Government Mule, Allen Ginsberg, Drive-By Truckers, and the touring giants Widespread Panic (who have also recorded and regularly perform several Hutchens compositions). He has co-written songs with Widespread Panic, Jerry Joseph, David Barbe, and more. He has recorded with Johnny Sandlin, Roger Hawkins and David Hood of Muscle Shoals fame, John Keane, and David Barbe (eight records and counting).

Officially-released Hutchens compositions now number over 200, and counting unreleased material, the song catalogue has now passed 500 titles. Hutchens plans to release a book of lyrics, as well as a book of selected poems, journal entries and essays in 2016.

The new Daniel Hutchens record, THE BEAUTIFUL VICIOUS CYCLE OF LIFE, was released in 2016. Produced by Widespread Panic's Dave Schools and engineered by David Barbe, the release also features musicians Dave Schools, Duane Trucks, David Barbe, Jesse Aycock, Frank MacDonnell, Todd Nance, William Tonks, Eric Carter, and Thayer Sarrano.

Eric Carter
Eric Carter was born in Baltimore but grew up in West Virginia. Rock n Roll Music wasn't really that old when he was a kid, but a kid's concept of Time is a whole other matter. He picked up his basic roots from his parents.

From his Mom, a lot of Motown stuff - the Supremes, old Jackson 5, Ray Charles and the like. But she also had 8 Tracks, as well, The Beatles "Greatest Hits" and, of course, the BIG ONE - "Hot Rocks" by The Rolling Stones. He also picked up his first Bob Dylan record from her - "Bringing It All Back Home".

Through his Dad he heard a lot of country. Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Waylon and Willie stuff, Roger Miller on the country stations he would listen to.

There was a big love of Elvis thrown into all of this mix as well.

"As I got older and started picking out my OWN records, I had found a decent "Classic Rock" radio station as well as a "New Rock" station. Talking Heads, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Dire Straits, Tom Petty - things like that. But everything I listened to in one way or another ran back to The Blues."

"I met Danny Hutchens when I was 7 or so and as we grew up we would share all this mess with each other and by the time we were in High School, we began to try and learn how to DO some of this stuff and find our own Voice with it, which can take awhile."

In 1986 they moved to Athens to begin their "let's start a Band!" adventures and started Bloodkin, which in many opinions is the best Rock and Roll band to ever come out of the Classic City. UGA had some great Old Time, obscure Rock n Roll, Country, and Blues shows at the time and this further enriched his firm foundation.

He and Danny continue to tour the country as Bloodkin and still call Athens Home.
