Sunday Songwriters' Revival
Every Third Sunday of the month, "Mojo" Mark Wilmot hosts local and regional songwriters who showcase original songs and tell us the stories that inspired them. Mark is an Athens native who grew up singing the songs his Granny taught him on their rides through the hills of Northeast Georgia. He sings his own songs in the Athens area with the Redstone Ramblers, including many times at No. 3 Railroad Street. Please see the Events Page for details and the Photo Pages for images of their events. Mark is eager to promote local songwriters through this monthly event.

This month marks the first anniversary of Mogo's Sunday Afternoon Songwriters' Revival. These monthly events have always been well received and we hope that the featured songwriters have increased their audience and advanced their careers by performing at No. 3 Railroad Street. We thank Mojo for organizing this monthly event, corralling the songwriters, preping posters for each event and giving us bios and links for each participant.

Mark and fellow member of the Redstone Ramblers, Ken Parris, alternated playing with Betsy Frank this afternoon.

Betsy Frank is featured this month.

A native Virginian, Betsy Franck honed her chops in the music scenes of Charleston, South Carolina, Asheville, North Carolina and Athens, Georgia before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2014. Her music reflects her journey through Appalachia; her clean, soulful voice carries these places with her wherever she goes.

Music came to Betsy early in life. As a child, she taught herself by ear, first on piano and then re-writing songs from her mother's guitar chord songbook. She may be known in songwriting circles for her prowess with a pen, but is perhaps best known by fans for the strength of her voice. Her powerful vocal style, a common focus of accolades, has been described as "Gospel-strong," and "siren-sweet." Betsy's vocals can soften you to sleep only to hasten your heartbeat in the same song; like a steady rain and crackling thunder.

After putting forth multiple albums featuring full arrangements, "Sweepin' up the Porch" in 2002, "Help Up By Progress" in 2003, and "Still Waiting" in 2010, she sought to pare back her signature band sound to give us a glimpse of the heart that lies behind all that power. Betsy is currently working on the follow-up to her first solo album, "This Far" of 2012. In addition to her own projects, Betsy has appeared on albums by Randall Bramblett and others. She provided wonderful gospel vocals on the Redstone Ramblers' release "Graveyard Gospel."

Along with Adam Payne, Betsy played No. 3 Railroad, as part of this series on songwriters, on June 17, 2018. The full set of images can be found in the Photos Gallery.

Josh Perkins
Josh was to be here, but has cancelled.

Most recently Perkins has been focussed on two projects that keep the majority of his attention. "Theomataras" is an extension of his efforts with "no option", digging a little deeper into the darker side of Josh's song writing. Pulling on influences like Pink Floyd, The Deftones and Tool, Josh has refined the art of dark and brooding.

"Josh Perkins Experiment in Southern Hospitality" is located at the other end of the music spectrum. Pulling on influences that range somewhere between Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Calexico, and Mumford and Sons, Josh is revisiting what brought him to the acoustic guitar in the first place. Having cut his teeth at the now infamous Eddies Attic, in Decatur Ga, Josh is no stranger to heartfelt lyrics and emotionally moving vocals. Joining Josh in the Experiment is long-time friend Adam Payne, who thoroughly compliments the mood that the band is attempting to create.

Whether playing as part of a full line up, or simply taking the stage as a solo performer, Josh is capable of engaging an audience and holding their attention until the last note.
