The Bones of St. Michael (according to its provisional website): A new addition to the Athens Music Scene. Gypsy Jazz played by veteran players well versed in the vernacular. We will be posting more about this ensemble shortly. Stay tuned.

Ivan Strunin cut his teeth playing in the honky-tonk country bars of Chicago in the 1980's. He has since played in blues bands, western swing bands, bluegrass bands and rock bands in various locations around the world, the last being Hong Kong before he moved to Athens. He plays with Susan Staley and Maggie Mason Hunter in the Humdingers, Maggie Mason Hunter and Tommy Jordan in Maggie and the Mason Jars and occasionally in the western swing band, Doug Deluxe and the Rodeo Cowboys.

Gypsy Jazz was what drew Ivan away from classical music. The musical style of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt opened his eyes to the possibilities of the fiddle. When he came to Athens it was his desire to create a "Hot Club of Athens" but found that it already existed. Ivan found four of the best players in the area who are steeped in this music and the "Bones of St. Michael" was born.

The band consists of veteran musicians. Rob Southerland on mandolin (Rob is also a symphonic cellist and a talented luthier as well). Dick Daniels is, in all likelihood, Athen's busiest bass player. Antoon Speters is on guitar and does vocals. Both Antoon and Dick play in the Hobohemians among many other bands. Finally, John Prechtel is also on guitar, holding down the rhythm section and playing lead as well.

Hostess (!) Mary Nouri writes:
No. 3 got lucky this week! Ivan Strunnin, new favorite fiddle player in town, has gathered a few other top notch musicians to form a great new group, THE BONES OF ST. MICHAEL. And we get to host them!

Their genre is GYPSY ROCK. You probably already know several of them.
