JOHN McDONALD and FRIENDS
Friday, June 4 2020, at 6:00 pm

John McDonald and friends bring us music from his newest (and best) CD, "One Red Rose." It is dedicated to his (and our) beloved musicians who have recently died, John Prine, Guy Clarke, Townes Van Sandt, Leonard Cohen, and others. They continue to live through the incredible music in this album.

Coming with John is almost the entire lineup of musicians from "One Red Rose." They will be Russ Bell, Nathan Bowen, Glyn Denham, Mark Maxwell, Adam Poulin, and Mindy Towe.

John McDonald has been playing and singing the blues for over 40 years. He began in his native Massachusetts playing in local coffee houses in Boston, Cambridge and Worcester. He moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 1980 to attend school and continued to play solo locally including opening for Muddy Waters at a local concert. John next moved to Davis, California to attend graduate school and started a band called "Buddy Funk" that became popular in the Sacramento/Davis and San Francisco Bay area.

He next moved to Athens, Georgia to take a faculty position at the University of Georgia (Genetics) and started a blues band called "the unforgiven" that played regularly in the Athens/Atlanta area. In 2016 the band broke up ("...we got sick of hauling equipment around and not getting to bed until 3AM and then having to get up to attend our day jobs the next morning..."). Since 2017, John has been playing and recording solo in the Athens/Atlanta area. His music is still rooted in the blues but he also enjoys playing music by Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Ry Coder and, his good friend, Eric Dahl.

John had a release party for an earlier album "Even Cowboys Get the Blues" at No. 3 Railroad Street on January 10, 2020.

Outside music, John currently spends his weekdays serving as Director of the Integrated Cancer Research Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He is happy to spend most weekends at his house on Lake Oglethorpe in Arnoldsville.
