Annual Athens Area Shape Note Singing

Come sing from shape note hymnals originally published in the 1800's by Georgia composers - The Social Harp by John G. McCurry of Hart County and The Sacred Harp by B.F. White of Hamilton. Potluck luncheon (dinner on the grounds). 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All are welcome. atlantasacredharp.org, 706-769-8782.

If you have never heard Shape Note Singers... you are in for an incredible experience. This is a wonderful group of folks who spend many weekends a year singing just for the joy of it. They have invited us to come for a listen. I would remind anyone who would like to hear them to enter the back of the room quietly and be respectful of their space.

A LETTER OF WELCOME from Mike Spencer:

Please come and join us for a Shape Note Singing on September 16th, from 10 am until 3 pm. This annual singing is held the same Saturday each year, and all are invited to listen and to participate. It's community singing, acappella style! There will be anywhere from about 15 to 30 singers, using the Christian Harmony shape note song book. Singers take turns calling songs and leading from the center of the "hollow square." Bring food to share at "dinner on the grounds" at noon.

I would remind anyone who would like to hear or join to enter the back of the room quietly and be respectful of the space. Feel free to find a loaner book and join in. Loaner books are usually laying on a table - Mike Spencer or another singer will likely notice and find you a book. There will be a large poster that will give you a quick orientation and will show which side of the square has what voices - tenor (men and women), alto (women), bass (men), and treble (men and women).
