Fester Hagood's Mojo Confessional Songwriters Showcase
Redstone Ramblers, Ty Manning, and Fester Hagood
5 pm Sunday, May 8, 2022

Fester Hagood organizes what he calls Fester Hagood's Mojo Confessional Songwriters Showcase. It builds on Mark Wilmot's "Mojo's Sunday Afternoon Songwriters' Revival" which brought two singer/songwriters to No. 3 Railroad Street each month. We look forward to hearing both new and familiar voices and stories about their songs under Fester's direction. Please read about both series of concerts, and about Fester, on the Songwriters page.

This afternoon, Fester brought Ty Manning, The Redstone Ramblers and himself for some great entertainment. There was also a Mother's Day picnic and a tribute to Mark Wilmot.

Ty Manning has played No. 3 Railroad before, on a bill with the Redstone Ramblers, August 12, 2017.

Ty Manning has been making music in and around Athens, Georgia since the summer of 1994. His old band The Bearfoot Hookers had a pretty good run; 1,000's of shows, 3 full-length/original albums, songs on three Athfest CDs, two Flagpole Music Awards, and on CNN pickin' and a grinnin' at a Crop Mob! (Look it up. It's a country-hippie thang!) He had a band with his wife Kelly Hoyle (Norma Rae) called Beauty & the Beard for a little while, but neither lasted. Over the next year or so, Ty wrote an album-worth of songs and did mainly solo gigs.

Eventually solo gigs turned into full band gigs doing several shows under the title Ty Manning and Friends, now Ty Manning and the Slawdog Biscuits. The line up consists of: Scott Nicholson (keys, guitar, accordion, guitar and vocals); Derek Warren (bass); Connor Griffin (drums); and Adam Poulin (fiddle and vocals). They are a rock-n-roll band with deep connections to 70’s and 80’s country. All that being said, they can still pack a punch. They sound kind of like if Ace Frehley from KISS sat in with The Black Crowes and did a Ronnie Milsap tune. OOH YEAH!” Ty has been called an idiot, a drunk, a dreamer, a life coach, the Capt'n of the party, a REVEREND, & hell... even a ninja, but no matter what anybody says, he can usually cause a pretty damn good time. Definitely worth checking out.

Ty has been through so much in the last decade: sobriety, marriage, 3 open heart surgery, divorce, grad school! All of these things inspired the tunes that ended up on Ty Manning and the Slawdog Biscuits’ debut album, "Empty House." Check it out!

Fester Hagood was one of the songwriters invited by Mark Wilmot for the songwriters series. He played and talked on Sunday afternoons May 20 2018 with Jefferson Ross, August 18 2018 with Levi Lowrey and June 16 2019 with Varney Watson. The last one had great music and commentary, of course, but probably enhanced by the contents of the Mason jar that Mark sometimes brought for both the audience and the performers.

Fester has been a staple of the Classic City's music scene for over a decade. Hagood began writing music at the age of 16 and has been performing as a solo act in the Athens bar scene since early 2000. In 2015, Fester produced the Redstone Ramblers CD, "Graveyard Gospel." He hosted The Tuesday Night Confessional at The Nowhere Bar in Athens from 2013 onwards which was the inpiration for Mark's Songwriters Revival. Fester is one of the pillars of original music in the Athens Area and an especially good citizen.
